i was looking at artist canvases at the weekend and noticed that they were gesso primed. will have to google it and see what i come up with

Gesso is a base coating for wood, paper, canvas, etc. You will see canvas panels listed as pre primed with gesso. It give a good 'bite' to the surface on which the paint will be applied. It is opaque.
