I may have found a way to avoid some of them: check in the title section of the post when it was first posted. If it was 2007, 2008, 2010 etc., it is obviously not a new post and if the last poster (right hand colummn) is bestluckly 2012 then don't open it. No one currently using the site is likely to have resurrected such old posts. It could save us a bit of agro. It could also help us avoid other such nuisances at least where the old posts are concerned.
